The Enviro-Septic® Wastewater Treatment System is approved for use in Connecticut; however, our current approval requires the system to be designed in much the same way as a conventional pipe and stone system. In other states where we are approved for use, our systems are given a significantly reduced bed size and/or reduced separation distance to restrictive features in recognition of our superior treatment capabilities. For example, in New Hampshire, our bed size can be less than half the size of a conventional leachfield, and our system can be installed closer to the water table than any other approved product.
The smaller bed size requirement is primarily what makes our system a good value to the consumer, since less fill material, excavation, and labor is required to install our system. However, since the State of Connecticut does not allow for a bed size reduction with our product, using our system would simply not be cost-effective for the consumer. For this reason, we have elected not to distribute Enviro-Septic® in Connecticut at this time.

UPDATE
ISDH conducted a number of Enviro-Septic® site inspections during the spring of 2009 to assess how well these systems are functioning. While the vast majority of Enviro-Septic® Systems were installed correctly and functioning properly, there were a few design/installation errors that were seen frequently enough to warrant corrective action. The various problems identified had one thing in common-the result was hydraulic overload (flooding) of the treatment field. Since Enviro-Septic® is an aerobic treatment system, saturated conditions are detrimental to its function. Not surprisingly, these problems became most noticeable during the heavy rains that occurred in the spring of 2009, when onsite systems were subjected to heavy storm water run-off.
The Design Worksheet and the accompanying materials give you the benefit of knowledge and experience we’ve developed through the years, and we’re confident that using them will make your job easier and help ensure the quality of Enviro-Septic® designs and installations in Indiana.
The Design Worksheet (pdf) was developed in cooperation with ISDH. In an effort to ensure consistent, high-quality design and installation of Enviro-Septic® systems, PEI and ISDH are strongly recommending the use of this form. Consistent use of this form by all designers and installers will also make it easier for the local health departments to perform their required inspections. In order to assure that everyone involved is “on the same page,” completed forms are to be provided to the designer, the installer, the system owner and the local health officer. Click here for a helpful, informative presentation on the use of the new worksheets. The Installation Checklist is available within the Design Worksheet(pdf) and as a stand alone form. It can be a valuable inspection tool.
Hydraulic Loading Technical Bulletin
The Indiana Training Update Technical Bulletin provides detailed information about potential causes of hydraulic overloading and what can be done to prevent it.
- Crowning during final grading
- Installing of swales
- Lowering of seasonal high water table with perimeter drains
- Insuring that foundation drains, sump pumps and gutter systems not discharge in the system area
Update for Raised Connection and Tee Baffle Installations
There is an update providing details illustrating the correct installation methods for raised connections and tee baffles in the distribution box.
Owner’s Manual
During these site inspections, it was discovered that some system flooding issues were the result of the system owner’s actions after the system was installed.
- Filled in or altered swales
- Failed to inspect the outlets of their perimeter drain to remove obstructions
- Directed water from drains or gutter systems to the treatment field area
- Made changes, having no idea where their treatment field was located
In an effort to educate homeowners about the proper use and care of an Enviro-Septic® System, we have developed Owner’s Manuals.
We recommend that you
- Print out a manual and provide one to each system owner before their new system is put into use, or
- Direct owners to the website and encourage them to familiarize themselves with these important instructions that will enhance their system’s function and maximize its longevity.
While Enviro-Septic® is “Technology New to Indiana,” it has been used with exceptional results for over 15 years throughout New England and across Canada, with about 100,000 systems in the ground. There is a learning curve when introducing anything “new;” but, once you are accustomed to working with Enviro-Septic®, we are confident you will find our system to be quicker, easier, less expensive and more versatile to design and install.

Advanced Enviro-Septic® Now Approved in the State of Maine!
We are proud to introduce the Advanced Enviro-Septic® Treatment System (“AES”) in Maine. Advanced Enviro-Septic® is the next generation of our effective and reliable Enviro-Septic® technology; it has received Class I Certification under NSF International/ANSI’s Standard 40 for Wastewater Treatment Devices. The AES product is also approved for non-NSF Certified installations in Maine. To read more, see our Maine AES Technical Bulletin.
Manuals, Approvals and Forms
Design and Installation of AES Systems in Maine: The Design and Installation criteria for AES are nearly identical to those for Enviro-Septic®; the only difference is to ensure that pipes are positioned so that the white Bio-Accelerator® is centered along the bottom of the pipe, and venting is mandatory for AES. The State of Maine has approved AES under the same terms and conditions and using the same manual as is currently being used for Enviro-Septic®. For non-NSF certified systems, the Enviro-Septic® Design and Installation Manual and Maine State Attachment provide requirements for design, installation and use. It is acceptable to substitute AES into a plan for an Enviro-Septic® system; however, if the designer’s plan specifies AES, Enviro-Septic® cannot be substituted for AES. For a limited time during this transition, we will continue to offer original Enviro-Septic® to accommodate customers who have already submitted plans for or contracted for an Enviro-Septic® system. Industry Professionals who are certified to design/install Enviro-Septic® in Maine will not be required to re-certify in order to use AES; however, certification will be required for those who have not previously completed Enviro-Septic® training. We encourage you to visit our website to learn more about the many advantages offered by Advanced Enviro-Septic®. Certification training is now available via the convenience of online webinars.
To design and install an Advanced Enviro-Septic® or Enviro-Septic® System you will need both the design and installation manual and the state attachment. Inside the state attachment you will find the state approval as well as design and installation information specific to your state.
Presby Environmental strongly encourages all those involved in the design, installation or permitting of an onsite Enviro-Septic® System to attend a certification course. UPDATE
Previously the State of Maine’s acceptance conditions for Enviro-Septic® Wastewater Treatment Systems required that the separation distance to the seasonal groundwater table or other limiting factor be measured from the bottom of the sand in the system. Newly modified acceptance conditions allow this measurement to be taken from the bottom of the Enviro-Septic® pipe. This new separation measurement allows Enviro-Septic® Systems to be installed 6″ closer to the seasonal groundwater table or other limiting factor.
This acceptance modification was granted because of data received from extensive third-party tests conducted in Canada and at the University of New Hampshire and presented to the Maine Bureau of Health. These tests compared the Enviro-Septic® Wastewater Treatment System with conventional pipe and stone installations and determined beyond question that the Enviro-Septic® System is by far more effective, efficient, and environmentally safe.
This acceptance modification means a great deal to homeowners or commercial businesses. Here are just a few of the new advantages.
- More in-ground installations will be feasible. In-ground installations eliminate the need for costly and unsightly mounded systems.
- A system previously requiring a costly pump may no longer need one. Installing a system 6″ lower could accommodate a gravity system.
- Designs previously requiring elevated building foundations to allow for gravity fed systems could eliminate or reduce this requirement. Handling of large amounts of costly fill would be eliminated and greater site flexibility realized.
- System locations will be more site flexible. A mere 6″ adjustment could allow a home or building to be more conveniently situated on a site.
- Multi-LevelTM Enviro-Septic® Systems will also get a 6″ advantage.
In general, saving money and providing enhanced installation flexibility are two major factors affected by this modification. Add to that the superior environmental protection offered by Enviro-Septic® and you have the key to our continuing growth and acceptance throughout North America.

Enviro-Septic® and Advanced Enviro-Septic® Venting Clarification:
All Advanced Enviro-Septic® Systems must be vented; however Enviro Septic® systems still follow the venting guidelines put forth in the 2003 Enviro-Septic® & Simple-Septic®Leaching Systems Design and Installation Manual. These require a vent when:
- When a pump is used to gain elevation from the septic tank to the leach field
- When there is more than 18” of cover over the field
- When under any parking, roads, or other hardscape that will reduce air passage.
- All Multi Level Systems must be vented.
The information contained in the 2003 manual is still relevant for Enviro Septic® Systems, and we do still support the Enviro Septic® product.
We do recommend all systems to be vented, whether AES or ES. A vent will mitigate future situations out of the designers control, such as additional soil cover used in landscaping, occasional instances of higher volume loading, etc.
Bypass Venting alternative to Differential Venting
(Differential venting is required for systems utilizing a pump to gain elevation to the field)
Flow Equalizers
When do we require flow equalizers and what type is allowed?
A flow equalizer is always required on distribution box outlets whenever the flow is being divided. If only one outlet of a distribution box is being used, a flow equalizer is not required. Our preference is that the Polylok® flow Equalizer®be used, which is claimed to maintain equal flow even when the distribution box shifts over time and becomes out-of-level. However, our manual does allow the use of other equivalent devices. When pumping to a distribution box the same rule would apply; if only one distribution box outlet is being used, no flow equalizer is required.
